Why Chasing Social Media Algorithms Is a Waste of Time and Focus.

algorithm

If you’ve ever felt like you’re constantly trying to crack the code of social media algorithms, you’re not alone. (You can learn about each of them here)

Many businesses spend countless hours tweaking posts and chasing trends in the hopes of being favoured the mysterious algorithm gods. I do think people stress way too much in general about social media and becoming obsessed with algorithms is no exception.

As a solo or small business owner, managing social media can feel like you’re constantly running on a hamster wheel, especially when everyone’s talking about algorithms. We get it—it’s tempting to want to “beat the system” and figure out how to make your posts go viral. Ironically many people make viral posts talking about how they “beat the algorithm” and showing others how to do the same.

Algorithms are not the answer.

But here’s the truth: obsessing over algorithms is a waste of time. We are educated about them and are aware of them as it relates to our clients but honestly, focusing on building genuine connections and delivering value will take you much further in the long run.

algorithms

Algorithms change frequently and are designed to be unpredictable. What works today might not work tomorrow, and trying to outsmart them can distract you from what’s truly important—connecting with your audience. Instead of chasing trends or tricks, focus on creating valuable, engaging content. Build relationships with your followers, stay consistent, and let your authenticity shine through.

Apart from having an actual social media strategy. Here are four simple tips to shift your focus from algorithms to what really drives results:

1. Focus on Consistency Over Perfection

Instead of worrying about the algorithm, concentrate on posting consistently. Whether it’s three times a week or once a day, create a manageable schedule you can stick to. Your followers will come to expect and appreciate regular, valuable content—and that’s more important than “tricking” the algorithm.

2. Engage With Your Audience

Building relationships is key. Reply to comments, ask questions, and start conversations in your posts. Social media is a two-way street, and platforms prioritise meaningful interactions over quick tricks. The more genuine engagement you create, the more likely you are to naturally increase your visibility.

3. Provide Value, Not Clickbait

Rather than trying to ride the latest trend or gimmick, focus on offering real value to your audience. Share insights, tips, or stories that solve their problems or inspire them. People follow businesses because they trust them and find value in what they offer—not because you’ve mastered the latest algorithm hack.

4. Analyse your own Data

Rather than fixating on the ever-changing algorithms, it’s much more effective to focus on your own data. Track which posts resonate with your audience, what times they’re most engaged, and the type of content they interact with the most. By analysing your own results, you’ll get clear, actionable insights tailored to your business, allowing you to make smarter content decisions. This hands-on data will tell you more about what works for your audience than any vague guess about how the algorithm behaves.

In the end, the most powerful way to grow your business on social media is being consistent, authentic, and genuinely helpful. Forget the algorithm and focus on what really matters: your people.
